About storing documents online
Is it safe to store important documents online?
When they’re properly encrypted, yes — often safer than paper, which can be lost to fire, flood, or simply misplaced. Every file in Passings is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and sent over an encrypted (TLS) connection. With zero-knowledge mode on, a file is also encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before it uploads.
What is zero-knowledge encryption?
Zero-knowledge means a document is encrypted on your own device, with your plan's vault password, before it reaches our servers. Passings keeps no copy of that password, so Passings staff and servers can't open the file. People you give the vault password to can. It is the most private way to store a document in Passings.
Who can access my documents?
You decide who to share it with: anyone you add as a collaborator and give vault access to. Access is to the vault as a whole rather than to individual documents, so give it to people you’d trust with all of it. You can see who has access and change it at any time.
What happens to my documents if something happens to me?
That’s what the vault is built for. Your Passings Successor can reach your documents to the extent you choose in your plan settings, so the right person isn’t locked out at the worst possible time, and you decide in advance who that is. One thing to plan for: anything you protect with zero-knowledge encryption also needs your vault password to open. Passings keeps no copy of that password and cannot open those files for anyone.
